FBI: INTERNATIONAL: Derek Haas Teases Vo Going Undercover in ‘Hail Mary,’ Plus Scott’s ‘Major’ Second-Half Arc

“Hail Mary” – Vo goes undercover when the Fly Team investigates the mysterious death of an American model in Milan. High fashion turns deadly on the Tuesday, December 13 episode of FBI: INTERNATIONAL, “Hail Mary.”
“We love to go country-hopping on the show—in this one, we head to Milan, which is the fashion capital of Italy,” showrunner Derek Haas previews to Give Me My Remote. “There’s a whole underbelly side to the fashion industry, where models come over from various countries—in this case, an American—and are exploited and made to do things to get a leg up, or are told that if they attend certain parties, they might get a leg up. One American woman gets in trouble in that regard. The Fly Team heads over there to figure out what’s going on.”
To get a better insight into the world, Vo (Vinessa Vidotto) “ends up going undercover,” Haas teases. “Our actors and the characters love to go undercover.”
As Vo navigates the undercover gig, “she’s very poised, as you can imagine,” Haas says. “She’s good at it. She doesn’t get rattled, and I think that’s one of the reasons why Forrester brought her on to the team to begin with. And then it’s evident here, because [if things go awry], a lesser agent might have panicked, but instead it just makes Vo more acutely aware of why she’s there and what she’s doing.”
Another team member also is key to the investigation, in a very different way. “Personally, I hope everyone loves Smitty as much as I do, because it’s just been a great character to write, [plus an] addition to our team,” Haas says of Eva-Jane Willis‘ Europol agent. “And she has a hunch—a Hail Mary, if you will—as to how she can find some evidence, that nobody else can find, that would help point towards the murder. And it’s only by Smitty going the extra mile and working an angle that no one else saw that she can help [with an important break] in this case.”
“Yesterday’s Miracle” – The Fly Team searches Bucharest for a Romanian surrogate who goes missing shortly before carrying the biological child of an American couple to term. Also, Forrester’s concern about the safety of his neighbors in Budapest intensifies, on the CBS Original series FBI: INTERNATIONAL, Tuesday, Oct. 18 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+. One person will be noticeably hands-off during this case: Forrester (Luke Kleintank). And while Scott has been away from the team for various reasons over the past few episodes, it’s for a very good real-life reason.
“Luke had a baby—he’s an awesome guy and an awesome dad,” Haas gushes. “And we planned this arc around the fact that [with] a newborn, he would want some time to be a dad. And, of course, as a father myself, and as anyone who works at this company will attest, we’re a big family; we’re a family-friendly organization.”
For the writers, they decided to utilize Kleintank’s (short-term) limited availability to play with their storytelling. “We figured out, okay, for the episodes he’s gonna be off, let’s do two things: One we can enhance all the other characters and let them have some episodes where they can shine on their own,” Haas recalls. “And two, put Forrester’s career in jeopardy. He’s being bounced around and not working with the Fly Team and he’s going to want to know why. This is going to lead to a major second half character arc.”
