EMMYS and AMERICA'S GOT TALENT: FANTASY LEAGUE

LOS ANGELES, CA – January 15, 2024:  “Succession” wins for Outstanding Drama Series onstage during the 75TH EMMY® AWARDS airing live from the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles on Monday, January 15 (8:00-11:00 PM ET live/5:00-8:00 PM PT live) on FOX. © 2024 Fox Media LLC. Cr: FOX

Let’s talk about Monday night’s TV!

EMMYS: Look, the show ended on time. It’s a miracle. We may never get this again.

For its 75th anniversary, for the most part, the show felt like a love letter to the medium, which is certainly more than you can say most years. Yeah, there were very few surprised. Yes, the gag of Mama yelling off people was poorly thought out and I’m extremely glad they pivoted. Of course it’s insane—on paper—that SVU is about to enter its 25th season (and will have its 25th anniversary later in the year) and they weren’t one of the reunions, but…they’re still actively in production, and getting people to LA from New York is a lot more impactful to production than, say, something like GREY’S which films in LA. And, okay, it was weird to do the tributes to TWILIGHT ZONE and I LOVE LUCY (obviously) sans original casts and also tease us with some theme songs that didn’t actually come into play in the show. (Still not over the brief X-FILES tease.) At least it didn’t run over.

But it was lovely how many reunions we got—and, honestly, more importantly, how many sets were recreated for a number of them. How many segments seemed to actually incorporate key elements of the tone into it. (The ALLY MCBEAL dancing?!)

And I cried my stupid face off at the memorial segment. The terrible side effect of the Emmys being delayed (due to the two strikes) is that it was extra months of deaths…and we had a whole lot of painful ones in the past few months. There were too many awful, tragic young deaths. Too many favorites. Too many deeply kind souls gone too soon. And I was already a mess before they transitioned into “I’ll Be There For You,” but I was broken when they switched to that. Just..painful.

But it’s also impossible to think about tonight’s show without acknowledging that there was a clear message that (multiple) accusations of sexual assault or an environment that seemingly ignored a performer’s disturbing history with the topic were not enough to stop people from being rewarded, whether it was with a prestigious hosting gig or an Emmy sweep. I wish it wasn’t tainting an otherwise great night.

AMERICA’S GOT TALENT: FANTASY LEAGUE: Oh, I am delighted Loren Allred is competing in this show! I knew she was on THE VOICE back in the day, but didn’t realize she competed on BGT. I’ve listened to “Never Enough” an embarrassing number of times, and this performance was absolutely gorgeous. I hope this leads to the success she deserves.
