Let’s talk about Monday night’s TV!

AMERICA’S GOT TALENT: FANTASY LEAGUE: Two-hour result shows are always bloated, but they feel even more so when the audience at home gets no say/control over who wins.

And, look, the Ramadhani Brothers are extremely talented. Were they the right winners? With all due respect to them…it did not feel like that was the case. (But I’d also argue a number of acts shouldn’t have been in the finales at all, so at least they did something insane/felt like they should be there.) But it’s hard to get too worked up about this since this isn’t a regular season. This is obviously a big deal for them, but the stakes aren’t quite as high. Oh well.

NCIS: One of the hardest things to watch—and cover—is when a show has to tackle a real-life death. It’s never easy for anyone, and for NCIS, they also had the “problem” that so many of David McCallum’s former beloved colleagues are long gone from the show. But Brian Dietzen and Scott Williams (and the writers in general) did a beautiful job of making the episode feel like a genuine tribute to Ducky’s past relationships by utilizing so many clips, and, of course, bringing back Tony for the final scene. (It was lovely to know the other NCIS teams sent flowers.) The show did a really good job of weaving in the characters’ grief while also allowing them to put effort into solving one last case for their beloved friend. Again, not an easy task, but they did a really good job at honoring McCallum/the show’s history. (Also, I’ve seen the moment of Ducky’s dog lying down multiple times at this point and my God, what a brilliant, quiet way to reiterate that something was very, very wrong.)

THE IRRATIONAL: The second time in a week a show got me, because I was watching the finale, thinking it was so lovely to end with a montage showing that people are doing okay in the aftermath of the church bombing and then…BAM, six weeks later. (I think I may have literally said, “Oh boy” out loud, because you knew they weren’t going to be jumping ahead then if there wasn’t a cliffhanger coming.) Poor Rose. She definitely did her best to fight back, but oy.

I thought the case wrapped up well, with the appropriate amount of devastation. I was worried for weeks that Rose or Jace might be tied into the crime (either back then or as part of the conspiracy now) and I’m really glad that wasn’t the case.  I’m really looking forward to what they do in season 2!

[For more, here’s what showrunner Arika Lisanne Mittman shared about the finale.]
