Robyn (Queen Latifah) and Dante’s (Tory Kittles) finally-blossoming romance hit a major snag on the Sunday, May 19 season finale of THE EQUALIZER.

Though the duo were happily basking in the aftermath of their first kiss—and first date—when the episode opened, things quickly took a turn when Dante got a message from his boss. At work, he was faced with an ultimatum: meet for a task force based out of LA or be essentially benched in New York.

Initially, Robyn pushed him to take the job, and Dante reluctantly took a meeting with his potential new colleague. But after a near-death experience for Mel (Liza Lapira)—who decided she needed to take care of herself and take a step back from the team—Robyn realized she didn’t want Dante to leave New York.

The two met up and shared they both had something to say; Robyn spoke first. “I meant what I said, about you being great at that job,” she told Dante. “But I have to be honest: I want you to stay. I know you and I can make this work. I need you in my life.”

But Dante’s news changed everything: “Robyn…I’m headed to the airport,” he said, regretfully.

When she was dismayed he was leaving immediately, he explained, “After reading the file they sent, they’re chasing a child predator. Actually a whole ring of them. The man they’re after, every moment he’s free…”

“You have to go,” she replied. “I’d do the same.”

“It’s not what I wanted,” he acknowledged.

“But it’s what’s necessary,” she said.

Though she was tearing up, Robyn tried to put a positive spin on things. “You’re gonna love it out there,” she said. “Sunshine, palm trees. Who knows, you might even get discovered.”

“It’s like you said, right?” a clearly devastated Dante replied. “You never know what the future holds. If it’s meant to be…”

The duo shared a final kiss and embrace before Dante walked away. But Robyn had one last message before he left: “You stay safe out there.”
