CASTLE’s leading lady will officially be a part of season 8: Stana Katic (Beckett) has signed a deal to return for next year, ABC has confirmed. (Nathan Fillion (Castle) signed on for season 8 last month.)

Last night’s season finale featured Beckett at a crossroads as she had to decide whether she’d pursue becoming a captain or going down the path of a political career. By the end of the hour, she was undecided, so viewers will get some resolution to that story.

The upcoming season will feature some behind-the-scenes changes, however. As previously reported, current showrunner David Amann is stepping down, with long-time CASTLE writer Terence Paul Winter and former CASTLE writer/current THE FOLLOWING co-showrunner Alexi Hawley taking over as co-showrunners. Additionally, CASTLE creator Andrew Marlowe and executive producer Terri Edda Miller confirmed on Twitter that they’re leaving the series. (Marlowe and Miller co-wrote last night’s excellent finale.)

Update: An ABC rep has confirmed that the supporting cast has also signed on for season 8.

With THE FOLLOWING ending its run on Fox, co-showrunner Alexi Hawley has already lined up his next job: he’s re-joined CASTLE for its upcoming eighth season, and he’s been promoted to co-showrunner.

Hawley — who worked on the ABC drama from 2009-2012, and penned nine episodes during that time (including the excellent hour, “Kill Shot”) — will run the show with newly-minted showrunner, Terence Paul Winter. (Current CASTLE showrunner David Amann is stepping down after one year as showrunner.)

CASTLE’s season finale airs this Monday at 10 PM on ABC.

CASTLE: David Amann Teases Death on ‘Mars,’ Castle’s Missing Time, Beckett Mythology, and More

CASTLE has (seemingly) said goodbye to its 3XK arc, and now it’s time for the team to get a little bit of a breather…to solve a murder on Mars.

No, the team isn’t going to space (though there are plenty of space/alien/sci-fi jokes in the hour), but the next episode, “The Wrong Stuff,” finds Castle, Beckett, and the team investigating the death of an astronaut who was training for a potential mission to Mars. (It’s as hilarious as you might expect.)

And while there are some lighter hours ahead, the show will also touch back on the mystery of Castle’s wedding day disappearance and subsequent missing months, and Beckett will try to figure out what’s next in her life.

I spoke with CASTLE boss David Amann about those things, and more…

CASTLE: David Amann Teases the ‘Fantastic’ ‘Reckoning’

3XK/Jerry Tyson returned to the CASTLE scene in a major way with Monday’s episode, “Resurrection”: after being presumed-dead, he resurfaced (along with Dr. Nieman) long enough to claim he was another man who had surgery to look like Tyson…and for Beckett to be drugged and kidnapped, while Tyson and Nieman were at the precinct.

The second hour of the show’s nearly-annual two-parter, “Reckoning,” is perhaps even more intense than “Resurrection” (and maybe ten times as twisted), a fact CASTLE boss David Amann attributed, in part, to the team who helped bring it to life.

CASTLE: David Amann Teases What’s to Come in 2014, and Shaking Things Up in 2015

CASTLE is only about a third of the way through its seventh season, but already the show has delivered on some big moments and reveals: Castle and Beckett got married, we learned more about Castle’s missing months (after he went MIA on his wedding day) — and that Castle was the one responsible for his memories being erased.

As the final episodes of 2014 play out, it’ll be a mix of the lighter hours (the December 1st installment, “Last Action Hero”) and tense ones (tonight’s episode, “Kill Switch”). And the final episode (“Bad Santa”) will pave the way for a bit of a shakeup in 2015.

I spoke with CASTLE showrunner David Amann about what’s in store…

CASTLE: David Amann Teases Castle and Beckett’s ‘Honeymoon’ in ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’

CASTLE’s Castle and Beckett got married in an adorably perfect/fitting ceremony in the latest episode of the series, and naturally, next up is a honeymoon. Unfortunately for the duo, it’s not their real honeymoon — they go undercover at a dude ranch to try and solve a case.

And while going undercover might sound like they’re going all out with fake names/personas, etc., CASTLE showrunner David Amann noted that the circumstances of the case will allow the two to keep things a little bit more simple than a traditional undercover assignment.

CASTLE: David Amann Teases the Alternate Reality (and Real Wedding) in ‘The Time of Our Lives’

One of the biggest CASTLE episodes of the series is airing on Monday, November 10th, and while one aspect of the hour has been widely reported, the fact that viewers will meet alternate universe versions of the characters we  know and love has been a bit swept under the rug.

“It’s kind of become known as ‘the wedding episode,’ but in fact, there’s a really delightful story and series of events that precede that outcome,” CASTLE showrunner David Amann teased. “Essentially, what happens is Castle is investigating a case with Beckett, and through a mysterious and, ultimately, sort of an up for debate means — in terms of the audience’s takeaway of what really happened — he finds himself in an alternate reality where he has never met Beckett, and everyone around him is quite different, including his own family. So he’s thrust in the position where he’s trying to figure out a way to get back to his real world. And he realizes that solving the case he was solving in his original world, by solving that case in [the alternate reality], he stands a chance of returning to his original world.”

Unfortunately, since the team Castle generally works with doesn’t know who the heck he is, things will be a bit complicated…and the new version of Beckett that Castle finds might throw him for a bit of a loop.

CASTLE’s sixth season ended in a way many fans didn’t expect: instead of Castle and Beckett tying the knot, he disappeared on the way to their wedding…and was presumed dead. But since the show is called CASTLE, it’s fairly safe to say the show won’t be going down that tragic path.

To get a little bit of insight into what’s to come, I sat down with CASTLE creator, Andrew Marlowe, and new showrunner, David Amann, to talk about season 7, how Castle’s absence is impacting the people who care about him most, and more…

CASTLE underwent a public changing of leadership last month, but when ABC boss Paul Lee spoke to the press today, he emphasized the transition wasn’t as big of a deal as many might have thought. And when I caught up with CASTLE creator, Andrew Marlowe, and new showrunner, David Amann, at ABC’s Television Critics Association press tour party, they echoed that the job shifts for season 7 weren’t as major as it might appear.

CASTLE underwent a sizable behind-the-scenes shakeup last month when series creator Andrew Marlowe stepped down, and long-time executive producer David Amann took over main showrunning responsibilities.

But, when ABC President Paul Lee spoke with reporters after his Television Critics Association press tour executive session, he reiterated that Marlowe is remaining a huge part of the show’s creative team.
