So I’m assuming you have all set your TiVos for DAMAGES tonight after my glowing review of the show. Do it! And let me just say that I’m really bummed out to know that tonight is the season finale of KATHY GRIFFIN: MY LIFE ON THE D LIST. The season went by just too fast. Sigh.

MeeVee RecommendsDamages
FX debuts a hot Enron-scented legal drama tonight, pitting Glenn Close as a civil attorney against Ted Danson as a corrupt CEO.

MeeVee RecommendsKathy Griffin: My Life On The D List
In the third-season finale, Kathy scores an award from Irish America magazine. The recognition inspires Kathy to connect with her Irish roots, so she journeys with her posse to Dublin, where she offers a sweet gesture in memory of her father.

Big Brother 8Big Brother
Kail and Jen are on the chopping block this week. Tonight the contestants vie for the coveted Golden Power of Veto. Last week Danielle won it and used it to take herself off the block. Did Kail or Jen win it and save themselves? If you want to know, click here for Big Brother spoilers.

MeeVee RecommendsShaq’s Big Challenge
America’s weight problem isn’t just lazy kids. Tonight, Shaq fights budgets, bureaucracy, and the clock as he tries to get schools to offer more gym classes and healthier lunches.

MeeVee RecommendsThe Singing Bee
Of the two karaoke-inspired game shows airing this summer, I suggest you watch the one where the backup singers are dressed up in bee outfits and the host is ex-‘N-Sync singer Joey Fatone.

Question…I’m wondering if any of you watched last night’s SAVING GRACE? I didn’t get a chance to watch the pilot at work as I hoped to yesterday, and with the debates on last night I didn’t see it when it aired. Hopefully I can catch it today at some point.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE Scoop from the TCAs

Reason #76857 I’m bummed I’m not at the TCAs…a Q&A and performance by the Top 10 finalists from SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.

According to E! Online’s Jen Godwin, Danny twirled, Sara defended B-Girls and Lacey Schwimmer announced she wasn’t in it to win it (well kind of). Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe talked about the kinds of dance that is featured on the show (whatever can be reasonable taught and learn within 5 1/2 hours), and Dominic tells us how he and Sabra prepare for the new dance genres (YouTube).

Drew Carey named new host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT

Drew Carey…come on down! YOU are the new host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT!!

Tonight on THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, Drew Carey will announce that he just today he was named as successor to  Bob Barker as the new host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT.

Here’s what we will see during tonight’s segment:

“I actually had lunch with an AP reporter today, we had a big, long lunch,” Carey said. “I couldn’t tell him anything because we were negotiating the deal. And they approached me right after the pilot for ‘Power of 10,’ and they called me, I said, ‘No.’ Then they called me a month later, they said, ‘What if we really’ — they called my agent: ‘What if we really go after Drew.’ This is like a month later after I did the pilot for ‘Power of 10’ and I said, ‘Well, what does that mean?’ and he said, ‘Well, you know, I mean, maybe this kind of money.’ I go, ‘What kind of schedule?’ He said, ‘I don’t know,’ so I met with them and stuff and we’ve been negotiating ever since.  Couldn’t say anything, but during your ‘Harry Potter’ bit — honestly it was like 15 minutes ago — they called me. It’s a done deal.  I’m the new host of ‘The Price Is Right.’”

With the audience wildly applauding, Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra played the theme to “The Price Is Right” in honor of Carey’s announcement.

Letterman offered Carey his congratulations.  Carey said that he’s not sure when he’s going to start working on “The Price Is Right,” but did say that already “my girlfriend was on the phone with a personal shopper from Bergdorf’s.”

“Well, history says that this will be a nice long career for you as the host of ‘The Price is Right,’” Letterman commented.  Carey said, “It’s fun doing a show for years and years, isn’t it?” and Letterman concurred.

DAMAGES on FX…Don’t Miss It

Damages, Glen Close

Every once in a while a brilliant new show comes along and its got everyone talking You know that show…the one that you are kicking yourself for because you missed it and you feel its too late to get caught up. Yeah, so that show is DAMAGES and luck for you, you didn’t miss it. DAMAGES premieres tomorrow night at 10/9c on FX.

DAMAGES is dark, smart and edgy thriller with superb writing and impeccable acting. It’s one of those shows that begins with the ending and unfolds as it works its way back from the beginning. It’s a formula that is risky these days as TV watchers are starting to get a bit leery of getting invested in this type of show only to have it disappear without the satisfaction of a proper ending (The Nine, Day Break, etc). But viewers can rest easy this time around because I am confident that FX will let us enjoy the experience of DAMAGES from beginning to end.

The legendary Glenn Close leads up the cast as Patty Hewes, a high-stakes litigator who is equally admired and feared by her colleagues. Ms. Hewes is the type of lawyer that won’t let anything stop her from seeing justice pervail, even if that means she has to break the very laws she holds in high esteem to do it.

BIG BROTHER SPOILERS (NEW)

BIG BROTHER SPOILERS

I’m missing my DVR so much. See when you have a DVR, if you miss the beginning of a show because you are caught up in reading Harry Potter, it’s not a big deal because you can go back and watch what you missed. My lack of a DVR and my own stupidity resulted in me missing most of BIG BROTHER last night. It wasn’t a huge deal since I already knew from the live feeds that XXXXXXXX won POV (oops, sorry…I thought that last night they showed the POV competition, but they didn’t) but I was still bummed to miss it. I’m so intrigued to see how the houseguests are being edited and compare that to the “real” personalities I’m seeing in the feeds.

Speaking of the feeds, GMMR reader kilwiggle has just provided us a little scoop from inside the BB8 house. Seems Danielle and Dick had a little tussle last night over Dick’s behavior as HOH (can you say power trip) and his feelings about the budding showmance between Danielle and Nick.

I caught just a little bit of the feeds myself yesterday. Nothing too exciting happening on my watch. Amber and Eric were bonding up in the HOH. Amber was telling him that she was really sick of Dick’s behavior. Amber also said that Danielle was very much aware of her relationship with Nick and she’s a lot smarter than some give her credit for. Danielle isn’t being played.

Eric tried to pull a fast one on Dick by pouring flour on him while he was in the shower. The prank failed miserably as the shower door was too high for Eric and he got more flour on him than Dick (and I was forced to see Dick’s penis which was scarring in an of itself…ew). But the good thing is this all led to a conversation about pranks and the fact that the houseguests should be playing them more. Agreed.

The CNN/YouTube Presidential Debate

art.youtube.screen2.jpg

If you watch nothing else tomorrow night, please take the time to watch the CNN/YouTube Democratic Debate tomorrow night at 7pm EST on CNN.  In what I expect to be the most interesting and important Presidential debate to date (if not of the whole campaign), the Democratic candidates are going to be addressing issues and answering questions that real Americans truly care about.

Americans from all over the country, and the world have been submitting questions for the candidates via YouTube from some time now, and tomorrow night some of those videos will be shown and will force the candidates to answer questions that they may not be prepared for.  What are they going to do about the healthcare system?  What is there plan to address the Autism epidemic that has seized our country?  With are their plans to rebuild the Gulf Coast?  If the military is so important, why haven’t they joined (this from a young teenager).

Tomorrow night’s debate is going to be historic and in light of what’s going on in this country today you must take the time to watch this debate tomorrow night.  I’m begging you to do so.

Here are a just a few samples of the some of the questions the candidates might be faced with tomorrow night.   More videos and more on tomorrow night’s debate from CNN after the jump.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS & THE OFFICE Big Winners at The TCA Awards

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS & THE OFFICE Big Winners at The TCA Awards

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS may have been overlooked by the Emmy voters (who are these people anyway?) but the television critics from all over the country gave the NBC drama much love at last night’s TCA awards by awarding it Outstanding New Program.  Finally this show gets the recognition is deserves.

So with my favorite drama taken care of, what about my favorite comedy?  Well color me happy because for the second year in a row THE OFFICE took home the award for Outstanding Comedy. Seems that these TCA folks know good TV when they see it.

NBC conitnued to rack up the awards as HEROES was named Program of the Year. Alec Baldwin received the award for Individual Achievement in Comedy for his role on 30 ROCK.

The cable shows were the big winners in the drama category. THE SOPRANOS took home the award for Outstanding Achievement in Drama as well as the Heritage Award, and Michael C. Hall was the winner for Individual Achievement in Drama for his role as a serial killer in Showtime’s DEXTER.

The legendary Mary Tyler Moore was honored for her contribution to television.

Technology PSYCHs Me Out

What hotel doesn’t offer the USA network?  Mine apparently.  I was excited to tune into PSYCH last night, but for some bizarre reason my hotel offers eight channels of ESPN but not USA.  So when that failed I turned to my computer and figured I’d watch it on my Slingbox.  Then I remembered that my Slingbox isn’t working either (not sure why but this is the second trip that I’d had issues with it.  Hmmm).

So I guess I’ll wait to see if last night’s episode turns up online later tonight.

I didn’t want you all to think I was just ignoring it.

GOSSIP GIRL Notes from The CW TCA Panel

July 20, 2007 by

Tcatour_2The CW is the only network that hasn’t bothered to send me their Fall pilots.  As I was such a champion of GILMORE GIRLS, EVERWOOD, and this little show called VERONICA MARS, I had hoped that I was on their radar.  I guess not.  And it’s a bummer for them, because while I trust that I would love the salaciousness of their new show GOSSIP GIRLS, I can’t write a proper review because I haven’t seen it.  Instead I’m going to have to post a review from someone whose cup of tea this show ain’t.  Come on CW, give me some love!!

Here’s what MeeVee Editor Joel Brown had to say about the show, and its presentation at the TCAs.  You gotta love a guy that isn’t a afraid to hold back when it comes to asking the tough questions.  This had me snickering.

Earlier in the CW session, they touted their interactive site for the new show “Gossip Girl,” allowing teens to “enter the world of the show.” I think I pissed off head honcho Dawn Ostroff by asking if the kids would be able to buy their Stoli online along with the fashion and music. (No.)

The kids on this show are mostly rich, spoiled and nasty, and while one or two are trying to do the right thing, mostly the show makes underaged sex, drinking and drug abuse look glamorous. But hey, I grew up in the ’70s. What is so troubling about this show is how glamorous it makes the lives of selfish, backstabbing, bitchy mean boys and girls.

I Love You Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling

Shhh…don’t tell any of my girlfriends, but I’d drop them all in a heartbeat if Mindy Kaling called me and asked me to be her best friend. I have such the girl crush on Mindy. We’re about the same age, we grew up in the same area, she loves boys who wear converse and cardigans just as much as I do – what more does it take for us to be BFFs?

So what’s prompting this sudden outburst of love and affection? Well I just finished reading Mindy’s latest blog entry and it was so funny that I just had to share a portion of it with all of you. I know I’ve talked about her blog on GMMR before, but it’s worth mentioning again. It’s called “Things I’ve Bought that I Love“, and the name says it all. On her blog Mindy (and occasionally some of her friends…who would of course be my friends if Mindy and I were best friends) write about things they recently bought or own and why they love them and everyone else should love them too. Simple right? Yes. But being that Mindy is a premiere comedy writer on the smartest comedy on television, her shopping and product rants are always hysterical.

Case in point…check out the blog entry for today. She could have simply mentioned that she likes the Alisha Levine top that she has, but no, she goes on and gives up the context for wearing the shirt and exactly why you should own one in a way that only Mindy can tell you. I completely embarrassed myself by laughing hysterically out loud just as a co-worker passed by my office door. Oh, and I triple dog dare you NOT to hear Kelly Kapoor’s voice in your head as you read this.

From “Mindy Kaling Staples, Pt. 3

Alisha Levine TopYou know those weekend nights when all you want to do is sit cross-legged on the floor and watch Jesus Camp or whatever? And then your boyfriend is like, “hey, we never go out, all we do is sit on the floor eating dinner and watching documentaries. Let’s go to a party thrown by an acquaintance of mine.” And in your head you want to be like “Can’t you read this grimace on my face and this inert body language? Go by yourself. If you’re so into a jet-set life of partying and drinking or whatever, let’s just break up.”

But then since he’s so cute, and your butt is starting to hurt for sitting on the floor so long, you decide to go. But you don’t want to wear your cutest outfit, the one you saved for when you think you might see an ex-boyfriend or whatever, you just want to look passably cute so your boyfriend is like, reasonably psyched to be standing around with you.

This top is great for that. I have slung it on sulkily more times than I can count. It seems totally boring in the front, right? All roomy and skin-concealing? And then bam! Backless! (Longsleeve and backless? I love you, Alisha Levine!) Guys at the party are like: “shit dude, that girl’s showing some skin. Let’s talk to her.” And then your boyfriend’s all “oh no why’d I even suggest coming to this.” and you can just smile at him with a look that says “This is what you get for trying to transform this homebody, Muchacho.” But then you both feel surges of love and emotion for each other, and you go home more in love than ever before. (Continue reading…)

Brilliant, agreed?!

Somewhere out there, someone gets to be friends with the awesomeness that is Mindy Kaling. Ha ha!! I had my shot and I blew it. Of all the people that I met while on the set of THE OFFICE, Mindy is the one I had the least amount of time with. She walked into the Video Village, chatted it up with Lee and Gene and then left. No picture. No bonding over our mutual love of Red Sox GM Theo Epstein (or boys in cardigans). Someday Mindy…someday!

P.S. Mindy, um you should know that I could have posted the generic Season 3 cast photo of Kelly sitting at the desk with the compact, but I chose to put in the extra effort to find an extra cute picture of you…because that’s what potential best friends do.

CBS Eye-lert Launches in Fall

CBS eye-lert

A special HOLLA to the folks at CBS who obviously spend most of their time reading GiveMeMyRemote.com and have read my many, many rants about how I hated when their Sunday night line-up would be affected by long running football games.

Week after week I would get settled in to watch THE AMAZING RACE only to realize that the Sunday Night football game went long, which meant 60 MINUTES was pushed back which affected the start (and end) time for The Amazing Race. All too often the chain of events caused by the football game meant that the last 20 minutes of so of The Amazing Race was cut off on my TiVo.

But this year CBS is launching CBS Eye-lert, a service that will send an email or text message when a football game runs past 7 p.m. The message will tell the user which shows were affected by the late game and when they will specifically start later in the evening. It’s not perfect, but it’s a start.

Dana Davis…Another New Face for HEROES

Dana Davis, HEROES

Someone is going to have to make me a cheat sheet to keep up with the cast of HEROES when it returns this Fall. There are so many new faces that I have no clue how I’m going to keep them all straight.  And forget about trying to remember their superpowers. So far in its sophomore season, HEROES has added at least nine new recurring characters to their already huge cast. As previously reported Nick D’Agosto (The Office), David Anders (Alias), Lyndsy Fonseca (How I Met Your Mother), Holt McCallany (CSI:Miami), Barry Shabaka Henley (Close to Home), and Dianna Agron will be seen in Season 2.

The latest addition to the cast is Dana Davis whom some of you may remember as Felicia , the daughter of Chi MicBride’s character on the short lived THE NINE.  Dana then went on to play Michelle on HIDDEN PALMS.  Needless to say that Dana must be super excited to be on a show that’s going to stick around for a while.

So who will Dana David be playing and just what superpower does she possess?  Well, all is mum on the HEROES front, but word on the street (and the street being TVGuide Blvd) is that Dana’s character, Monica, “would give up everything to help the people around her.”

Hmmm. What could that be?
