It was a nice day for a white wedding on the LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT season 22 finale—but it didn’t exactly go off without a hitch.

While Fin (Ice T) and Phoebe (Jennifer Esposito) spent much of the hour prepping for their big day (much to Fin’s chagrin), ultimately, they decided they didn’t want to get married that day…they were happy, together, and “why let the government spoil it?”

But the hour did prove to be a big one for the show’s other couples.

Carisi (Peter Scanavino)—whose new relationship had been hidden from his longtime crush, Rollins (Kelli Giddish), and was tasked with officiating the ceremony—used the opportunity to reassess his own life. When he told Nicole that he thought he’d be hitched with kids by now, she responded by sharing how antiquated she found the tradition of marriage to be.

After the ceremony post-non-wedding, Carisi read what he planned on saying to officiate the wedding to Rollins—who was moved and kissed her former partner.

“When I read it for the first time, I got goosebumps,” Scanavino previously teased of the finale. “And I think, hopefully, a lot of people will be happy and excited.”

Meanwhile, Elliot (Christopher Meloni) joined the festivities late, and asked Olivia (Mariska Hargitay) how the happy non-married couple met. When she tells him they were partners, the former partners look at each other and share a toast: “To partners.”

Things were less enjoyable for Garland, who was put under the spotlight after he testified that the department needed an overhaul, including bias training. After being torn into by his boss, exiled, and then brought up by a panel to account for his officers’ failings, he opted to take a few days off to take care of himself.

“Whatever they try, I’m not going to go quietly,” Garland insists.
