CHICAGO P.D.: Patrick John Flueger and LaRoyce Hawkins on Ruzek’s Big Gesture to Burgess

On the Wednesday, May 11 episode of CHICAGO P.D., Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) made a grand gesture to Burgess (Marina Squerciati): He wanted to buy his father’s home, and give it to her and Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams).

Though the former couple have never quite been able to get their timing right (so far), Flueger notes his proposition really was more family-based than pinning hopes on a possible romantic future.

“I think he’s been trying to join the [relationship] equation [with Burgess] for years now,” he acknowledges in the video below. “I think, in all honesty, at least where I was coming from—I don’t know where the writers are going with it—it’s not even about Kim as much as it’s about Makayla.”

“That’s where a big part of his heart lies,” he continues. “And I think he just wants to share that with the kid, especially if she might wake up to some torturous memories—he wants to make sure that he’s encased her in this goodness, in this bubble…he did have a tough youth, but he always had this home base that made him feel strong, made him feel good…it’s more about giving the child something that he thinks is important. Giving her something of himself, being he doesn’t have the opportunity to share a lot of who he is, his name, his everyday life with her.”

And if Burgess ends up balking at the offer, Ruzek has someone on his side (on and off-screen): LaRoyce Hawkins‘ Atwater.

“As I watched the moment unfold, I thought was very beautiful and manly,” Hawkins says, citing how he felt when he watched his real-life son play in his family’s backyard. “To watch you your offspring enjoy it in the same way that you did, and to watch it feel so big for them, as well, I think that’s a very reasonable moment to want from father to child.”

“Ruzek is doing his best to give a father-like input, even though he knows it’s not the most ideal situation,” he continues. “But he also feel responsible for these young ladies. So, to me, I think it was a beautiful, manly move. I’m looking forward to next season to see how it pans out. If Burgess doesn’t acquiesce to this beautiful offer, I think Atwater might have something to say about it.”
