THE SIMPSONS, THE GREAT NORTH, THE ROOKIE

THE SIMPSONS: In a book-themed trilogy, Marge’s resentment takes monstrous form, Lisa tries to save the planet through an anime murder spree and in a segment that breaks Matt Groening’s biggest rule: Homer learns he’s not the man he thought he was. It’s the all-new “Treehouse Of Horror XXXIII” episode of THE SIMPSONS airing Sunday, October 30 (8:00-8:31 PM ET/PT) on FOX. THE SIMPSONS © 2022 by 20th Television.

Let’s talk about Sunday night’s TV!

THE SIMPSONS: I was worried about the episode after the first segment, because it was a tough one for me. (Maybe I would have appreciated it more if I was more familiar with THE BABADOOK; it’s admittedly a pop culture blind spot for me.) But I enjoyed “Death Tome” and loved “Simpsonsworld.”

“Simpsonsworld,” in particular, is one I feel like I’m going to enjoy rewatching a lot. THE SIMPSONS is a show I watch (in reruns) basically  every day and I still feel like I missed some of the in-jokes in my first two watches of the episode. It’s also extra amusing because season 6’s “Itchy & Scratchy Land” was already a quasi-homage to the WESTWORLD film…it was a hat on a hat, in a good way.

THE GREAT NORTH: Uh, I’m officially scared of Honeybee’s family now…

The cat costume fitting everyone like some kind of magical SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS outfit made me laugh. And I’m weirdly happy for Beef he kept it for himself? He was so happy!

CELEBRITY WHEEL OF FORTUNE: Austin Creed was very good at this game! But, man, not solving a final puzzle when the answer is “Overthinking It”…that’s going to haunt you. (It’s not his fault, it’s a hard thing and he picked GOOD letters—I didn’t get it until his letters filled in—but no one is going to pick a “v” and “overthinking” is such a long word.)

BOB’S BURGERS: I could not for the life of me figure out what the kids were from the photos, but it being a TWISTER homage is…perfectly them. And poor Louise just wanted to be popular and it…well, it didn’t almost kill her, but good lord was she lucky she had her dad. (And they didn’t get more lost.)

FAMILY GUY: Yep, absolutely buy Peter pulling this. (And, look, hard not to note THE SIMPSONS did a similar thing years ago, though Homer was a clone versus a hologram.) I know it ended up getting promo-ed to death, but Lois frantically trying to get her boys out of the home and abandoning Meg made me laugh. (Normally I tend to have a little more sympathy for Meg than the show does, but even expecting Lois would screw her over, it still made me laugh.)

THE ROOKIE: Oh, God, Elijah is back. Nope, nope, nope. I do not trust anyone’s safety around him. No thank you, show!! (Please keep them all safe.)

Lucy sending Tim on a wild goose chase for his radio—and him realizing exactly who had it when it was pointed out whomever was sending him clues knew a lot about him—was very, very cute. Given the sheer amount of couples on the show right now, I’m quasi-skeptical about when they’ll move Chenford into a real romantic space, but, man, they deserve it.

It’s still rare when a recognizable guest star isn’t actually evil/bad/somehow doing the wrong thing, so props to the show for the J. August Richards guest spot, since he really just was an agent who wanted to catch his partner’s killer.

The Jake Tapper cameo amused me, because I absolutely did not place him at first and was just impressed how timely they were to have a Phillies fan costume while the Phillies were in the World Series. Thank you to Bailey for pointing out the obvious, even if Nolan didn’t figure it out.
