TRANSPLANT’s Bash (Hamza Haq) and Mags (Laurence Leboeuf) hit a relationship milestone on the Thursday, October 19 episode, “Baggage,” as they had dinner with her parents. But Mags’ father choking led to an unexpected consequence—he needed a check-up at the hospital, and Bash/Mags’ secret romance was revealed.

“We like to say that she drags him across the lines—that’s what she does,” TRANSPLANT showrunner Joseph Kay tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “Sometimes for the good and sometimes for the not-so-good. If it was up to him, it probably would have stayed a secret, but it’s not the way she lives. She’s very present-tense and she draws it out. So it creates conflict and it moves it much faster than he wanted it to move.”

That being said, “it’s also good for him,” Kay acknowledges.

For Bash, who has long struggled with trauma and its lingering effects, “he’s engaged in this constant battle in terms of, ‘Am I allowed to want more than just survival?’” Kay notes. “It’s a refrain that I keep coming back to with the character…maybe one of the reasons he wants it to stay secret is because he doesn’t think he deserves it. But he actually does deserve it. And she’s there to say to him, ‘Yes, you do.’”

“And Mags, herself, also has her own ghosts,” he continues. “She’s a very present-tense person, but she has health problems that she’s kind of hiding. And by being a person who drags him across the lines, she’s telling herself that she should be doing the same thing with herself. And so she’s going through her own kind of parallel journey with her past and with her perceived weaknesses. And so I think [their relationship being outed] allows both of them to challenge themselves, publicly.”
