Let’s talk about Monday night’s TV!

THE VOICE: How did only Reba and John turn for Ronnie Wilson?!

We are 75 million years into this show—and singing-centric competition shows—but I really wish more contestants realized it’s not about a song you love or what you connect with…it’s about singing a good song for your voice. I felt awful for the father who got no chairs, but it wasn’t the best song for his voice. The young woman who sang “Better Man”…that’s a hard song to audition with! (I know she got John, but I’m actually shocked he turned.)

Loved Serenity Arce getting a four-chair turn. I’m intrigued and confused by John blocking Dan and Shay…and then she went with Chance?! Also absolutely loved Elyscia Jefferson and the fact that she chose Reba. I hope they go far together.

MASTERCHEF JUNIOR: Oh, the fish + seaweed combo is interesting and hard for week 2. Especially when something like octopus is in the mix?! It’s very cute that Asher is a legacy in the MASTERCHEF world…and he’s clearly good at it.

(I love this show, but I will forever hate the kids being miserable when they’re eliminated. Sigh.)

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE: How was THIS not the season premiere? It had the memorable auditions! Very clearly manufactured drama! Actually put the spotlight on the contestants and their growing bond with each other, which reflects a bit more of this hybrid season we’re supposed to get! This is the episode we should have led off with.

Were things still confusing? Sure. The one-hour format is making things rushed and it’s clearly hard for the show to juggle everything. But this is the episode that (in theory) best represents what the show will be.

DEAL OR NO DEAL ISLAND: Well, in my initial notes, I was upset about how difficult it was to watch Stephanie cry…and then she got a steal and BLEW UP THE ENTIRE GAME, IN THE STUPIDEST WAY.

Look, no one is entitled to play a group game in most cases. But the thing is, this show specifically requires it. The literal only safe person is the one with immunity, because you could avoid the bottom and still wind up gone if the person playing DOND beats the banker. You need to have allies. You need to have a group who will protect you. And Stephanie blew that up. She has to basically beg the universe for the foreseeable future that every single player takes a bad deal, because she’s surpassed Kim as target #1.

And the thing is, she still could have played her own game and either taken Rob’s case or a mid-case with any kind of confidence. But she melted down and then exposed the plan, while denying she knew about it. Absolutely awful gameplay. SO ridiculous. But Joe’s reaction to it all was perfect…you honestly couldn’t have asked more from a host.

I’m really sad Claudia is gone, though. Joe was so delighted by her playing the game; I was rooting for her to take it all. Alas. (Also, Stephanie and Kim so clearly rooting against here…was sure a thing. This money was for the group! She could have taken a bad deal even if every option left was the very big numbers. Just a bad look.)
