THE GREAT NORTH, THE SIMPSONS, THE ROOKIE

THE SIMPSONS: Comic book guy and his wife Kumiko debate having a baby and we learn his awesome origin story in the ìThe Dad-Feelings Limitedî episode of THE SIMPSONS airing Sunday, Jan. 3 (9:01-9:31 PM ET/PT) on FOX. THE SIMPSONS © 2020 by Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation.

Let’s talk about Sunday night’s TV!CALL ME KAT: I wanted to like this a lot more than I did. Mayim Bialik was great on BIG BANG THEORY,

SUPERMARKET SWEEP: This isn’t the show’s fault, but super odd to have a single episode close out the season after a winter break—especially when it wasn’t a huge one.

THE GREAT NORTH: Fox has consistently put out animated shows, trying to bulk up their Animation Domination lineup, but THE GREAT NORTH was the first one I’ve really enjoyed from the pilot since BOB’S BURGERS. The family was charming, there was a BOB’S BURGER-like humor (which makes sense, since it was co-created by BB vets Wendy and Lizzie Molyneux), and I wanted to see another episode when it was done. Here’s hoping the quality stays consistent.

THE SIMPSONS: This was a great episode. I laughed out loud multiple times (including at the Kevin James trope joke), and the Wes Anderson-style origin story for Comic Book Guy was brilliant. I’ve been hit/miss when the show has focused on non-family members, but this was touching, original, and really fantastic.

THE ROOKIE: For as many shows that were in a good position to tackle police reform, THE ROOKIE was maybe in the toughest spot: with the lead character framed as being a dirty cop, there was a lot they had to get out of to plausibly keep him in the force. I thought the show did an incredible job, both of dealing with the cliffhanger, but also noting this has effectively killed any upward movement in Nolan’s career.

I did love that the show was able to have a real, blunt talk about the consequences of doing the wrong thing for the right reasons, and what a slippery slope that is. THE ROOKIE has been a show that has probably had some of the “best” cops on TV, but no show has been by the book. I am curious to see how it plays out when the show isn’t in triage mode, as the characters were trying to save Nolan’s career.

I do appreciate that Lucy’s trauma with Rosalind isn’t just being swept away. And clearly Rosalind isn’t done terrorizing the LAPD, so it’ll be interesting to see when the show plays that card again.

I really do hope that Angela’s pregnancy is able to progress the way she wants it to. Her opting to keep it quiet—even if it makes sense, professionally—rarely ends well on television.
