Peter Scanavino has one heck of a history with the LAW & ORDER franchise—outside of his regular gig on SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT as ADA Sonny Carisi, he’s guest-starred on the mothership, TRIAL BY JURY, CRIMINAL INTENT, and, yes, SVU, albeit as a different character—and he’s adding another show to his resume on Thursday, April 22: ORGANIZED CRIME.

“They just said, ‘Do you want to do ORGANIZED CRIME?’ and I said of course; any opportunity to be involved in as many of the LAW & ORDER shows as possible is always good,” Scanavino says with a laugh. “I’ve done quite a few.”

In the hour, “The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of,” Carisi is recruited to arraign the newly-arrested Izak Bekher (Ibrahim Renno)—who just happens to be a key helper to Richard Wheatley (Dylan McDermott), the criminal boss Stabler (Christopher Meloni) and Bell (Danielle Moné Truitt) have their sights on.

“It was really fun to be in a different courtroom, just being on a different set,” Scanavino says. “I kind of felt like SVU, but not. It was sort of bizarro SVU.”

Complicating matters is Carisi’s limited interactions with Stabler so far: the duo briefly clashed in the immediate aftermath of Elliot’s wife being hospitalized from an explosion. And unbeknownst to Stabler, Carisi warned Benson (Mariska Hargitay) that people were questioning what happened in the interrogation room when she had to pull her former partner out when things escalated.

“Their dynamic felt very business,” Scanavino previews. “We’re both here to do something together. And he needs me to facilitate it. But it’s his idea, and we’re just trying to get it done. I think a character like Stabler clearly holds his cards pretty close to his chest. So it’s not necessarily buddy-buddy, but it’s respectful, and we’re both trying to do our jobs.”

But being so tied to the L&O world did provide a bit of an extra bit of thought as Scanavino worked out to suss out how much Carisi should actually know about Stabler, who spent years in SVU.

“It’s interesting being on ORGANIZED CRIME, because you have to kind of reconcile what you know, personally, about the character, because it’s a legendary character in the LAW & ORDER world, [from] what my character Carisi would know about Stabler,” he notes. “How much has he heard about him? How much of a big deal is he in what Carisi has heard, just talking around the office? Is he familiar with the huge history that Stabler has with Benson and the meaning of Elliot Stabler in that world? So you kind of have to figure out what your character knows and what he doesn’t. And that is going to kind of play out [in] how the scene goes.”
