MASTERCHEF and SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE: TOP 12 TO 10: L-R: Contestants Virginia and James dance a Contemporary routine on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE airing Wednesday, June 22 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. ©2022 Fox Media LLC. Cr: Michael Becker

Let’s talk about Wednesday night’s TV!

MASTERCHEF: Okay, it feels like a major disadvantage to have the people under 21 have to cook with booze? And it’s not even like they were given the easier items, either.

I am surprised Cate was sent home. I thought Tommy might go given it was his second week in the bottom and they hated how his dish looked/it seemed he had an easier drink to incorporate into his recipe. But Cate’s cake being raw and her having to essentially just plate crumbs was just too much to overcome.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE: Okay, Leah should not be dismissing tWitch’s constructive criticism to contestants. It’s one thing if you’re not comfortable being negative—though that’s literally not the job; if you only praise everyone, you’re not being a judge, you’re being a hype person—but to tell a contestant to not listen to advice that was given with the intention to help them grow as a performer? Come on.  He’s not being cruel, he’s trying to teach them.

I hate how the voting is being handled. It being confined to in-studio is very limiting (and makes the at-home audience so passive about the process), not to mention it feels like it’s more likely to lead to problems if you can only vote a singular time for the best dancer versus have a single vote for the worst dancer. (The latter is harsher, but it feels like a better chance the right people will actually be in the bottom?)

It also feels unspeakably tone deaf that James and Virginia were sent home after Virginia disclosed she had been taken advantage of by a dance teacher when she was younger and the number she was doing. Even if you ignore Leah’s absolutely uncomfortable comment that Virginia didn’t incorporate her trauma enough into the piece, this young girl just revealed a deeply private thing…and she was instantly cut? (Not to mention, she wasn’t the weakest female dancer.)

Of course being a survivor doesn’t automatically grant you a place in the competition, but given the show’s recent headlines…it all feels bad.
