FBI’s fifth season kicks off with the city in a whole lot of danger on the Tuesday, September 20 premiere, “Hero’s Journey,” when the team’s attempt to track down a bomb goes awry as they realize they’ve already lost the device.

“You’ve got a missing bomb capable of blowing up an entire city block, and our heroes don’t know who has it or what they’re planning,” showrunner Rick Eid teased to Give Me My Remote via email. “So the stakes are sky-high. OA will be in the thick of it with some undercover work, but obviously this is an all-hands-on-deck situation for the team.”

Unfortunately for Jubal (Jeremy Sisto), he’s having to juggle his pressing work commitment with his prior promise to be at his son’s birthday party.

“We see Jubal’s personal life intersect with his professional life,” Eid previewed. “He’s obviously trying to be the best father he can be, while at the same time trying to be the best agent he can be. Easier said than done. We’ll see more of this personal/professional struggle in the future.”

And Jubal won’t be the only one (still) trying to adjust. “They all have lives outside of the Bureau, and we’ll definitely be exploring their private lives in more detail throughout the season,” Eid said. “We’ll see how they deal with these personal issues and how they impact their actions in the workplace.”

Looking ahead beyond the premiere, while the show has experimented with partner swapping, it’ll be used sparingly—when the time is right—going forward.

“Maggie and OA are a powerhouse duo, so we’re pretty excited to get that band back together when she returns,” Eid acknowledged. “Scola and Tiff are still growing as partners and hopefully we’ll get to see them leaning on each other more this season. But we’re always looking to shake up the team dynamics in interesting ways.”
