In the aftermath of CHICAGO P.D.’s team shakeup, the way the unit operates will undergo some changes—and throw some unexpected people together.

“This has been so fun—even 10 years in, there’s still different relationships to explore,” CHICAGO P.D. boss Gwen Sigan tells Give Me My Remote. “You can still get these people closer. Especially with Burgess and Upton, we want to show that connection that they have more this season, and show them working together and what it’s like to be in a unit like this, and to have to rely on people.”

“Upton is usually close to the vest, whereas Burgess kind of wears her heart on her sleeve more,” she continues. “That’s a relationship that’s really interesting and fun. And then having Torres, every single one of them have their own thing to build with him; he’s coming in and so fresh. So that’s been nice to write. Wwe’ll see a lot of those dynamics shifting…We also now need to figure out, ‘Okay, well, who’s going to be partners? How is this going to work out?’ It opens up new storytelling, so that’s been great.”

Also getting a new adventure this year is Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins). “I’m very excited about Atwater’s storyline this season,” Sigan teases. “We’re taking him in some new places that we just haven’t seen him in a while. Some new family dynamics, some new work dynamics, and getting to see him really become a leader this season. He’s gonna help take Torres under his wing and become a mentor—there’s a lot of great story coming up for him.”

The show also has a big milestone coming in early 2023: its 200th episode. “It’s a huge deal,” Sigan acknowledges. “We want to do something really fun, sort of action-packed, character[-based]. Just something to really celebrate that the show has made it that long. Celebrate the characters and everybody who makes this show happen. It’s a lot of people [who have gotten us here], and I think we’re planning on doing something really special and fun.”

CHICAGO P.D., Wednesdays, 10/9c, NBC
