Last season on CHICAGO P.D., Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) made a big move to take care of his family: He offered to buy his father’s home for off-on love Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and their daughter, Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams).

“It’s not even about Kim as much as it’s about Makayla,” Flueger shared at the time. “That’s where a big part of his heart lies…he just wants to share that with the kid, especially if she might wake up to some torturous memories—he wants to make sure that he’s encased her in this goodness, in this bubble…he did have a tough youth, but he always had this home base that made him feel strong, made him feel good…it’s more about giving the child something that he thinks is important. Giving her something of himself, being he doesn’t have the opportunity to share a lot of who he is, his name, his everyday life with her.”

And CHICAGO P.D. fans will get some insight into Burgess’ decision—and the Burzek relationship—in episode 2, “The Real You.”

“They are complicated, always messy, and fun to write,” showrunner Gwen Sigan acknowledges to Give Me My Remote. “We’re going to get some answers in the second episode. That big question that we left hanging: Will she move in with him? Are they going to try this thing again? Are they going to try to be a family? We’re going to get some answers in the second episode, and sort of see them get to a new place in their relationship—and one that is a bit more stable, which will be nice.”

Whether or not the duo opt to resume their romantic relationship, “we will see quite a lot the family unit, and see how how they’re dealing with parenting together, co-parenting,” Sigan teases. “And definitely that Makayla is doing well and has found some new footing at the start of the season.”

CHICAGO P.D., Wednesdays, 10/9c, NBC
