As CHICAGO P.D. prepares to say goodbye to Jesse Lee Soffer‘s Jay Halstead, the writers and actors are “definitely keeping some of the specifics under wraps, so that hopefully the fans can kind of live in it, as it’s happening,” showrunner Gwen Sigan acknowledges to Give Me My Remote. (It was announced in August that Soffer—who was an original cast member on the drama—would exit during season 10.)

“I think it will all make sense once people see the episode,” Sigan previews of Halstead’s exit. “We did our very best to keep it fully grounded and authentic to who Halstead is. And really wanting it to be a showcase for Jesse, who has done such great work for 10 years, and wanting him to go out [on a high point]—which he did. He put in this beautiful performance. So we tried to take it really seriously.”

Of course, Halstead being intrinsically tied up with the team means his presence will continue to be felt after Soffer exits. “This is somebody who is married to Hailey; he is Voight’s right hand man,” she continues. “I would say [Halstead]’s the person that keeps Voight stable, and kind of keeps him in check. And then he means so much to every single person in this unit.”

“We’ll see a lot of the fallout once he’s not there, and how those relationships and dynamics change,” she continues. “Who is going to step up and take that role for Voight, if anybody? How is Upton going to get through this? There’s a lot of really interesting stories, so we just we leaned in as much as we could to that, and played it honestly.”

    To Whom It May Concern:

Why didn’t you just replace Jay Halstead with another actor to play him?
