Ahead of the Wednesday, March 29 episode of CHICAGO P.D. episode, “Out of the Depths,” series star Marina Squerciati (who plays Burgess) posted a tease for the hour on Instagram.

“Tonight is one of my favorite episodes ever in #ChicagoPD history,” she wrote. “AND if you are a Burzek fan…this is the one to watch. I’m not teasing you; I’m telling you. THIS IS IT! #breakupormakeup #chicagopd #burzekarmy #burzek #cpd #paddyflueger #patrickflueger #cantwait”

And she was correct: After seasons of will they/won’t they, Burgess and Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) seemed to finally get back together.

Initially, Burgess was hesitant about bringing her partner into therapy, but she asked him to go with her after a hard case.

“Is it a restaurant?” Ruzek joked. She tried to downplay its importance, but he agreed to go.

At the session, the therapist tried to get Adam’s feel for how things were going for the non-couple. He acknowledged they had hiccups in the past, but, “we work through it—we’ll work through this, too.”

When she pressed him for more, Ruzek admitted “there were times I wanted more” and Burgess didn’t, so “we adjusted and worked through it.”

At Kim’s obvious reaction, their therapist asked for what was going through her mind.

“Oh, I don’t know,” she said. But, after a pause, she continued: “I haven’t ever not felt—it’s not that I didn’t feel the same way he did. I did. I always have. I just couldn’t, um…I couldn’t…I was just too—”

When it was clear Kim wasn’t in a place to continue on, the therapist let them move on to something else. Later, at home, the tension was obvious between the duo.

“You were too what?” he asked.

“I was too scared,” she answered. “And, um…”

He stepped closer to her and she paused. When she didn’t continue, Adam started to walk away—until Kim grabbed him, kissed him, and the duo went to bed together.

“I am really excited about where it’s going,” Squerciati told Give Me My Remote ahead of filming the episode. “I think it’s going to go in a surprisingly different direction that no one’s expecting. I’m working on that script right now…texting Paddy all these ideas and he’s tolerating it.”

“I just think that we’ve been in this place of Burgess sort of having PTSD and being numb for so long that I think the dam has to break—and it will,” she continued. “And what comes out of that is going to be super interesting to the fans.”

Added Flueger, “I think that now it’s posed to morph and evolve again…I think it’s all happening and evolving and moving on their time. In a way that isn’t some standard TV romance, but something that’s totally different and way more lifelike. Boy meets girl, puts ring on finger, live happily ever…that’s not the reality, that’s a fairy tale. And so I really enjoy the lack of fairy tale on our journey thus far. And I think that, you know, we still might have our happy ending, whatever that might look like.”
