Higgins (Perdita Weeks) was thrown when she discovered a ring hidden in Magnum’s (Jay Hernandez) things in the MAGNUM P.I. series finale—only for her to be thrown, again, when he admitted he was holding on to it for their friend Rick (Zachary Knighton).

After Rick and Suzy (Betsy Phillips) revealed their engagement, Magnum and Higgins shared a dance at the La Mariana. She apologized for how she reacted to the ring.

“I know that that wasn’t a normal response,” Higgins said.

“No, it wasn’t,” Magnum interrupted. “But, I knew who you were when we first got together and I love you just the way you are.”

“You do know me better than anyone ever has,” Higgins said. “About the marriage thing. It’s just that peace has been very rare in my life. And what we have is so perfect. The idea of changing anything is terrifying.”

Magnum reassured his partner he got it—he wasn’t in any rush to change things between them.

But Higgins had one more important thing to say: “Well, just for the record: If, in the future, you did ask me to marry you, I would say yes,” she promised. The duo smiled and shared a sweet kiss—and the series faded to black.

Though it left the relationship open-ended, Weeks shares that she’s happy with where the couple left off. “I am just glad that I feel like you can get an idea that they will live happily ever after,” she explains to Give Me My Remote in the video below. “And that’s all I wanted…with television, you never know [what the future is]…I feel like she’s basically promised him that they will live happily ever after. And that was important to me, that we could end there, just in case. And boy am I glad we did. It was always going to be [them together]…it was the plan. But we engineered it slightly differently on the day [of filming the final scene]. And I’m really glad we did. I’m pleased with that.” [Editor’s note: Read what showrunner Eric Guggenheim shared about the original plan for the final scene of the series.]

Weeks acknowledges she initially “struggled” with Higgins’ reaction to finding the ring. “I just thought she’d be overjoyed, honestly,” she says. But, ultimately, “it was kind of more interesting what the writers decided: She’s got a lot of lasting kind of trauma from her previous experiences and I think needing somebody as much as she needed Thomas was incredibly terrifying and made her feel vulnerable in a way that was very uncomfortable. And, yeah, not wanting things to change, you know?”

“I think she’s just so blissfully happy that any change in weather, no matter what it was, was terrifying to her,” she continues. “So I think I sort of made my peace with it…and it was kind of an interesting arc to play. But, as I say, I’m very glad that I feel like there’s resolution at the end and I feel like you believe that it will happen.”

And the series may have ended with Magnum and Higgins, but the scenes leading up to their dance featured nearly the entire cast…allowing for the group to have some meaningful time together in their final bit of production of the show.

“It’s always lovely [filming together],” Weeks says. “I always like the scenes in the Mariana because it’s the sort of clubhouse for the team. It was a great set—just being there was always really fun and relaxed. We obviously get on really well, so any day we’re all together, they put all our chairs in a circle and we eat snacks and tell stories and make jokes. It was always a fun day. It’s always fun when Betsy came to work. It’s like the gang’s all here!”
