MAGNUM P.I. signs off with a two-hour finale event on Wednesday, January 3, kicking off with the penultimate hour, “Ashes to Ashes.” In the episode (airing at 9/8c), Kumu’s (Amy Hill) routine volunteer shift with Rick at a veterans’ crisis call center takes an unexpected turn.

“We had been wanting to do a veterans crisis help-line story for awhile,” MAGNUM P.I. showrunner Eric Guggenheim teases via email. “We were actually going to do it in the first half of the season and at first we tried breaking it with other characters before realizing that the best way to tell that story was to make it a Kumu story.”

Then, in the series finale, “The Big Squeeze”—airing at 10/9c—new foe Bedrosian (Patrick Fabian) makes Magnum (Jay Hernandez) and Higgins (Perdita Weeks) an offer they can’t refuse.

“We get to see more of [Bedrosian] in the finale and get a real sense of just how cunning and ruthless he really is,” Guggenheim previews.

And though the episodes airing together in a block was not the initial plan, there is an unexpected bonus to them being paired together, Guggenheim says: “I’d also add that while we never intended for these two episodes to air back-to-back, they are connected.”
