Let’s talk about Wednesday night’s TV!

I CAN SEE YOUR VOICE: I had hoped the season premiere of it all would lead to a good outcome, and I’m glad it did…and my goodness, some of the bad singers felt, uh, worse than normal? But a good start to the season.

MAGNUM P.I.: Admittedly, it’s hard to talk about the final two hours without talking about the real-life circumstances around it. I enjoyed both episodes—laughed out loud at Magnum joking he was going to turn Higgins’ ashes into an engagement ring for his next girlfriend; I sobbed at Amy Hill’s performance in “Ashes to Ashes”; I thought the finale was interesting and balanced—but everything is colored by this being the end.

I may be in the minority with this, but if the show is ending there, I do like where Magnum and Higgins ended up. And I really like the changes they made to the final scene where they basically promised each other forever, anyway—and Higgins was more active in talking about her feelings.

But it’s sad. I was intrigued with where they were going and what they set up in the show. I was even more intrigued by what showrunner Eric Guggenheim shared that they planned to do if season 6 had happened. It’s a bittersweet ending, because in many ways even getting this fifth season was a miracle—but I wish we had gotten a little more. Alas.

[For more on the finale, here’s what Guggenheim and series star Perdita Weeks shared.]

WE ARE FAMILY: This is definitely a case of a show where the concept is interesting, but I’m not digging the format. Cycling through three celebs in an episode—while also having such a large pool of contestants trying to guess—just kind of feels like a mess? And at least in the first episode, the clues were very, very, very obvious and were much more about you knowing the actual celebrity versus being any good at the game. I’ll keep watching, but as scripted shows start back up…it’s likely going to be bumped down on my priority list.
