As NEW AMSTERDAM’s Max (Ryan Eggold) is trying to figure out what comes next in his personal life, the season 5 premiere is finding him back in a familiar work situation: He’s officially back at New Amsterdam.

“Max is, I think, really getting back to his mission of how do we help people,” Eggold tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “I think there’s a realization of, we can’t really help other people if we can’t help ourselves…there’s no real time for Max to wallow in self-pity, or any of these things. There’s so much to accomplish…he throws himself into his work, and I think that is really what’s pulling him back into the world.”

But it’s not exactly easy. “There’s this beautiful…little moment where Max has come back to the hospital,” executive producer Peter Horton teases. “And Iggy comes up and [is waiting for Max to ask how he can help], and he finally says, ‘Oh…yeah. How can I help?’ He’s got to be reminded of his mission a little bit, at that moment. And that’s his road to recovery. That’s his road to joy. It’s his road to being able to truly get back to his mission.”
