GHOSTS’ Thorfinn (Devan Chandler Long) has a son!

Sam (Rose McIver) encountered Bjorn (Christian Jadah) at her neighbor’s home on the Thursday, November 3 episode, “The Baby Bjorn,” and realized he was Thor’s son…and quickly tried to figure out how to reunite the duo.

Though Thor knew he had a son—Bjorn was a baby when Thor left, prior to his death—the reveal was news to his portrayer. “I was taking a walk with one of our showrunners, Joe Port, and we were with our friend, Ravi Patel, because Ravi was guest starring in an episode,” Long recalls. “And Port goes, ‘Hey, I think we’re gonna have your son come on–what do you think about that?’ And I got so excited.”

“So we were just kind of spitballing the idea the relationship between Thorfinn and his son and how it came to be,” he continues. “That was probably early on in the genesis of the whole storyline. I was, of course, excited to find out I had a son, because I didn’t know until he told me he did.”

Thor and Bjorn (eventually) were able to quasi-reunite, by yelling at each other from windows across their respective properties…which meant Long didn’t meet his on-screen son while filming the episode.

“I’m shooting the scene in a room, looking out into a studio, staring at a tennis ball. That’s it,” he says with a laugh. “The camera’s right in front of you, so you’ve got to get rid of the camera in your mind. And then you just got to [yell to nothing]. That’s part of acting—sometimes it’s weird as hell. But if you just ground it, you can get to that place. So I really had a lot of emotional response to this yellow tennis ball that was propped on a stick. I got really close [to the ball] afterwards—it was like the scene in CASTAWAY, when he’s yelling at Wilson.”

Despite having his son two doors over, Long cautions the reveal hasn’t impacted Thor—yet. “He’s yelling at this person, he hasn’t met him,” he notes. “It hasn’t really sunk in. Until you meet that person, face to face, and look them in the eyes and see their mannerisms and have that real connection to them, I think that’s when it really changes a person. I think right now, it’s kind of like, ‘Is this even real?'”

“Until Thorfinn and Bjorn can get in the same room, if they ever can—I don’t even know if that’s possible in the GHOSTS universe—that’s when I think that’ll change Thorfinn greatly,” he continues.

Which does lead to the biggest problem: The ghosts are constrained to the area where they died. So with another property separating them, how might they ever, really, reunite?

“There’s always exceptions to the rule,” Long notes. “I don’t know what that’s gonna be or if it will ever be, but look at STARGATE, how they go the other worlds, portals, and wormholes. We’re living in a world where ghosts can talk to humans. I think we can create a couple more little wrinkles to help a story along a little bit.”

Which means, yes, the show will be coming back to Thorfinn’s son later. “You don’t introduce Thorfinn’s son two houses away and then just shut down that storyline,” Long points out. “I mean, there’s gonna be a lot of issues to come back to: We learned that Bjorn, he married a Dane, and we all know that Thor does not like Danish people so much. So he has to unpack some stuff.”

“I know they have a lot more planned than I even know,” he continues. “I’m sure the writers have a bunch of stuff cooked up for the end of the season, and seasons beyond, if we are so lucky. But we’ll definitely get back over there to see what’s going on.”
