CHICAGO P.D.’s Voight (Jason Beghe) has long been invested in his cases and getting justice, but things took a serious turn when Intelligence got involved in the investigation into a teen’s abduction.

The young man, Noah (Bobby Hogan), was tortured and survived—but he was still essentially abandoned due to his family turning their back on him for being queer. Voight, who tragically lost his own son, Justin (Josh Segarra), early in the show’s run, was clearly  moved by Noah’s plight…and brought the young man home with him to recover.

But is Voight being drawn to Noah for Noah—or is he viewing him as a Justin surrogate?

“I try to think as Voight, and Voight doesn’t quite think like that,” Beghe acknowledges to Give Me My Remote. “It’s more for the audience to think that question…[if they’re questioning that] I’ll take that as I’ve succeeded, to some degree, because Voight’s not aware of it. He’s just like, ‘No, this kid needs help.’ And he doesn’t see the connection.”

“There’s a line coming up in the next episode, though, where Voight says to Noah, ‘You kind of remind me of my son,’” he continues.’” But it’s not on the nose like, ‘You remind me,’ it’s, ‘I don’t like thinking about him and I understand you don’t like thinking about what happened.’ And, you know, sometimes we say things that are so damn true, but we don’t even realize it. And I think that that’s what happened with Voight.”

Unfortunately for Intelligence, Noah’s case continues on the Wednesday, March 20 episode, “The Living and The Dead”—and gets increasingly complex.

“Well, it’s a very hard case,” Beghe previews. “And it becomes apparent that we have a serial killer. And Chicago P.D. has an unofficial profiler with a great reputation. So I seek her out and this is a new character [Josephine Petrovic] that’s helping us for most of the remainder of the season [played by] a wonderful actor Bojana Novakovic; very, very good actor. Very strong and wonderful kind of lady, just personally, as well. So that’s exciting.”

“But in terms of Voight, just the fact that he’s asking for help is a big deal,” he continues. “What we can say for sure is he is determined and invested more than usual.”

With so much on the line during this case, what does Voight actually make of Petrovic?

“He evaluates her, as she does him,” he acknowledges. “But what he really is caring about is that she can be useful and does her job, which is basically what Voight—and Jason—care most about in terms of work. It’s not that he doesn’t notice that she has her peculiarities…I think it is good to judge; I think it’s necessary. He judges. But that doesn’t mean he condemns. He just likes to see things for what they are. And that’s what makes him a good cop. And he’s observant. And so is Petrovic.”

The Intelligence team will also have their eyes on Voight, trying to figure out how much to help him versus let him work through this investigation in his own way. “I think that the team not only respects Voight, but they love him,” Beghe notes. “And they can tell that this is something that he is very invested in and cares a lot about—maybe too much.”
