As FBI: INTERNATIONAL’s second season gears up for its final arc, “the cases get a lot more personal,” star Carter Redwood (who plays Raines) tells Give Me My Remote.

“I’m excited for the fans to see that, because you’re seeing different sides of the characters come out as they’re solving the cases,” he continues. “I think it’s getting hotter and hotter. So I’m excited about that.”

Episode 20, notably, will be a big one for Smitty (Eva-Jane Willis). “[We are] going to introduce a member of [Smitty’s] family…which I’m really excited about and will probably reveal some of her very neatly buried baggage,” Willis says with a laugh. “Which is going to give us a bit more insight into who she is and what her story is.”

“The thing about the way FBI is written is that each episode that comes as much of a surprise and a shock to us as it is to you guys,” she continues. “We read, we film, it’s so fast. And so every episode we get, it’s like another piece of the puzzle, of this huge thing that’s being built over the entire season. So there are new things that are taking me by surprise each episode about Smitty and it’s really nice to have those discoveries and to keep building on this character.”

Redwood was a bit coyer about how the show will be digging into Raines’ relationship with Vo (Vinessa Vidotto)—especially after Vo reacted to Raines starting a relationship with another woman.

“They sort of started as partners; they have a strong friendship,” Redwood says. “Raines really depends on Vo in many ways…who knows what’s in the cards? Every script is a new piece of the puzzle, so it’s just fun to stay present, script to script.”

“It’s sort of this thing that’s evolving and living on its own,” he continues. “I think that’s the beauty of what we’re doing in terms of making the show…So in terms of their relationship, and their dynamic, it’s rooted in friendship. If that ever turns into anything more, I think the fans will love it. I’ve been looking at different Twitter comments, and people are rooting for it.”

The fans aren’t alone, either: “Even I’m excited about it,” Willis says. “You probably saw my face light up when you asked the question that we all have deep down, ‘What’s gonna happen?!'”

But the actors being invested in each other (and their colleagues’ storylines) isn’t exactly a surprise. “It really is a family,” Redwood says. “That’s the beauty of all of us having moved to Budapest to film this thing—it really expedited our bonding process. And with Eva joining us this season, she’s fit right in. And I tell her this all the time, I always sing her praises: she’s a perfect addition to the team…we’re really lucky in that sense.”
