[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Wednesday, May 8 episode of CHICAGO FIRE.]

CHICAGO FIRE’s Severide (Taylor Kinney) spotted a group of men trying to steal Truck from Firehouse 51 and snuck aboard…and quickly ended up on a multi-state journey on the Wednesday, May 8 episode.

Throughout “Inside Man,” the storytelling swapped back and forth between Severide’s time on the truck (and, eventually, with the group of men who stole the vehicle) and his friends and loved ones at 51, who were desperately trying to track him down.

“Our amazing writer Matt Whitney wrote this one (it’s based on a real event!), and we knew right away we wanted to see how Kidd especially would react on her end,” CHICAGO FIRE showrunner Andrea Newman tells Give Me My Remote via email. “The image we started with was Kidd walking out to the apparatus floor late at night, and seeing the Truck is just GONE.  And there’s Severide’s phone sitting on the table.  A chilling sequence of events for her to kick off the episode.”

By the end of the hour, Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Firehouse 51 had tracked down Severide—after he sabotaged the truck—the duo reunited. But after going through a lot this hour—and the past few seasons, is there any chance they might get a little bit of a break in the final episodes of season 12?

“Kidd is madly in love with Severide, but she’s also a tough-as-nails leader at 51,” Newman previews. “These two very different roles have always been a tricky balance, but they’re going to get even trickier in the episodes ahead.”

Elsewhere in the love department, Ritter’s (Daniel Kyri) secret cop boyfriend helped investigate Severide’s disappearance…and in the process, Ritter was forced to admit to Violet (Hanako Greensmith) that they were in a relationship.

“There’s always rivalry between firefighters and cops, and there has been a lot of conflict between police and 51 (especially Severide) this season, so it was a big deal to let Violet in on the secret,” Newman says. “But now that it’s out, the couple will have to be very careful about any conflicts of interest going forward, and any case that brings the two departments together will put them under a microscope, so we’ll have to see how they handle that!”

Equally complicated is the reveal that Cruz (Joe Minoso) and Chloe (Kristen Gutoskie) have been having marriage troubles…and will be headed to therapy.

“Cruz and Chloe will come to a big realization in episode 1212 about what’s been keeping them apart and will have to see if and how they can manage it,” Newman previews. “They love each other, and they have made an amazing family together, so the stakes are high.”

Unfortunately for everyone, it’s not like things will exactly be easier at Firehouse 51 in the final weeks of season 12—especially now that Damon (Michael Bradway) knows that his colleagues are suspicious of him.

“Damon is starting to feel the heat of 51’s scrutiny, and it only gets harder when he gets himself into big trouble on a call,” Newman teases. “With Novak’s advice, he makes a huge decision that will change his life, and Firehouse 51.”
