CHICAGO FIRE said farewell—at least for now—to Eamonn Walker, who has played Chief Boden since the show’s first episode, in the season 12 finale.

With Boden officially throwing himself in the ring for the position of Deputy Commissioner—and quickly getting the job—his colleagues came to bid him farewell as he packed up his office.

Though he tried to brush off any real farewells (“We are all going to see each other again, there’s no need for a big goodbye”), they were undeterred, telling him what he meant to them.

“There are people you say goodbye to,” Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) said. “And people you can never say goodbye to because they’ve become too much a part of who you are. They shaped you, trained you, taught you everything you know.”

“You made 51 a family, Chief,” Cruz (Joe Minoso) added. “And this firehouse a home.”

The group huddled together for a big hug.

With Boden on the way out, he selected Herrmann (David Eigenberg) to take his place as the firehouse’s leader. “You could look after our family,” Boden told him.

“Chief, I’m nobody,” Herrmann said. “And I’m for sure no Chief Boden.”

But Boden rejected that, and said he just had to be himself. “Whatever happens, boss, you’ll never know how much that means to me,” Herrmann replied.

They’ll need some stability when season 13 kicks off, because one of the core firefighters just had their world rocked a bit: Severide (Taylor Kinney) was stunned when new addition to 51, Damon (Michael Bradway), revealed his secret—his father was Benny Severide, and the duo are half-brothers.

Update, 7:15 PM PT: Watch a wrap on Walker’s final scene (production-wise) of the finale, as he praises the cast and crew on the “best job” of his life.
