FBI ended its fifth season—and celebrated its milestone 100th episode—with a religiously motivated serial killer on the Tuesday, May 23 episode, “God Complex.”

But for our core characters, who go through a stressful work situation virtually every week, the biggest hardship was a near-tragedy that hit close to home.

Initially, Nina (Shantel VanSanten) and Scola (John Boyd) got to enjoy a little bit of cute domesticity, bantering about the color of their son’s nursery. But Nina wasn’t feeling entirely well…and a conversation with her doctor raised further alarm.

After testing, it was discovered Nina had a Listeria infection—caused by something she ate, not from the gunshot wound she sustained months earlier—and it was endangering both her and her unborn baby. Though they tried medication, it wasn’t taking, and Nina needed to be rushed to surgery to induce labor, with the hopes it would save both her and the baby’s life.

But before that could happen, the doctor had an impossible decision for Scola: There was a chance they would only be able to save one of them…who should they prioritize? Ultimately, Scola opted to save Nina.

After the team caught the serial killer, Tiff (Katherine Renee Kane), Jubal (Jeremy Sisto), Isobel (Alana De La Garza), Maggie (Missy Peregrym), and OA (Zeeko Zaki) came to see Scola at the hospital…where he was staring at his son in the nursery.

“Guys, this is Douglas,” an emotional Scola told his friends.

“You named him after your brother,” Jubal says. (Scola’s brother died during the 9/11 attacks.)

“He’s perfect,” Maggie gushes.

“Yeah, he is,” Scola replies.

And after a season that found everyone challenged, the teammates ended the year safe, together, and marveling at the new life who had joined their quasi-family.
