CHICAGO FIRE season 12 was a year of transition for the NBC drama, something showrunner Andrea Newman (who moved from co-showrunning the series with Derek Haas to running it solo this past year) was aware of from the start.

“The theme of this season is change and evolution,” she told Give Me My Remote in January. “That’s just a part of life and nothing stays the same forever.”

Indeed, season 12 saw the exit of Kara Killmer (who played Brett), Alberto Rosende (who played Gallo), and Eamonn Walker (who played Boden); Taylor Kinney (who plays Severide) returned after missing the end of season 11. The series also added (and then said goodbye to)  Rome Flynn’s Jake Gibson. Near the end of the season, the show brought in Damon (Michael Bradway)…who was revealed in the finale to be Severide’s half-brother.

Looking back at the 13 episodes they produced this season, Newman cites how they handled the various shifts as what she’s most proud they were able to pull off.

“The big theme of the season was change, and how such a close-knit family as 51 will handle the joys and pains of change,” Newman tells Give Me My Remote via email. “New characters bring new dynamics and new relationships, and it was really challenging and rewarding to have these characters we’ve known for so long evolve in big ways this season.”

“It felt like a fresh start in lots of ways,” she continues. “And we’re so excited to dive into next season and see where it takes them all!”

CHICAGO FIRE repeats air Wednesdays at 9/8c on NBC. The series is also available to stream on Peacock.
